The Founders Personal Story
My Waist Beads was created by an African American woman named Malon Mahotiere. Welcomed into this world by her loving parents Dr. Sauveur Mahotiere and Rahmatoullahy Barry Mahotiere on January 6th, Malon was born in Conakry, Guinea located in West Africa. Her birth biological mother, Rahmatoullahy B Mahotiere was also born in Conakry, Guinea. Malon’s father is Haitian descendant and arrived to America in the early 1970s. Malon’s father, Dr. Sauveur Mahotiere was a teacher, professor, social worker, and a representative for the United States government. Her father studied Horticulture and Agriculture where he later met her mother while working on a project in Guinea. Malon’s parent got married in 1988 in Senegal at a Mosque church. After the wedding, Malon’s mother arrived in America where she later gave birth to her two sons. Sauveur Mahotiere Junior and Algassim Barry Mahotiere. Malon’s father received an opportunity to work in Mali. During this time, Malon’s mother was pregnant with Malon. Due to the pregnancy, Malon’s mother decided to have her in Africa. Malon and her family stayed in Africa until her fathers work contract expired. They returned to the United States and Malon was brought to America before her 1st birthday. In some African cultures, it is tradition after giving birth to a girl to place waist beads on them for protection. Unfortunately both of Malon’s parents passed away in a car accident when she was 1 and a half years old. Her family was traveling to Canada for a Horticulture and Agriculture convention. The car spun out of control and hit a tree. Malon’s father died instantly and her mother died on the way to the hospital. Malon and her brothers were removed from the vehicle and placed in a helicopter to receive immediate care. The only survivors were her and her 2 brothers. During her early stages of childhood, Malon had a desire to connect to her mother spiritually. After experiencing severe abuse and misfortune, Malon desperately wanted to connect to her mother’s spirit. When Malon reached age 10, she was given waist beads by her mothers friend from Liberia, Ms. Eva Haynes. She explained the purpose behind waist beads and what they represent in African culture. She expressed how much Malon’s mother loved waist beads when she was alive and loved wearing them. Malon was the proper age for young girls to learn about womanhood before puberty. Although Malon learned about waist beads at age 10, she did not continue wearing them. Malon accidentally broke her first pair of waist beads gifted by her Auntie Eva Haynes while attempting to use the restroom. Malon started to wear waist beads again at the age of 15 when she entered high school. Malon would purchase multiple waist beads from an African store nearby until she finally decided to start making her own. This decision came after another African woman suggested she create her own if the store is to ever run out of any. At age 16, Malon began creating her own waist beads by implanting the designs and colors she wanted and started selling them to her friends in High School. When it was time for graduation, Malon developed a reputation in school as the “waist bead girl” which followed her into her college journey. Malon believes my waist beads are a significant part of who she is now. A new journey of life started for her after wearing waist beads which later turned into a business. Malon created the name “My Waist Beads” to differentiate herself from competitors while encouraging ownership to other entrepreneurs. Each bead Malon wears on her body has a specific purpose or represents a significant moment in her life. Malon believes waist beads have protected her from a lot of things that occurred in her life. Waist Beads have also helped Malon with healing from child abuse wounds from neglect and abandonment, sexual trauma wounds from sexual abuse and grief. After losing her parents as a baby, Malon experienced many challenges and tribulations. Malon still believes waist beads prevented her from receiving major destructive harm despite the personal hardship she has endured. Malon believes in helping women overcome adversity and waist beads serve as an instrument for those willing to believe. Malon creating her own line and designs of waist beads for over 10 years is a measurement of her experience in helping women who are on their journey to personal healing, personal development or simply self love. Traditionally, the person who creates and offers waist beads for others within a community are encouraged to be considered spiritual leaders, healers or enlighteners.. Malon believes her mother and father’s spiritual guidance and protection led her to start this business. Money is not the motivational factor when it comes to Malon creating waist beads. Her passion to promote this exotic jewelry comes from the spiritual connection she developed while grieving the loss of her mother. Malon made the conscience decision to choose to share this. Helping other women feel beautiful, empowered and encouraging them to live a happier, healthier, healed life is the mission. Malon enjoys being able to help transform women with the magic power of wearing waist beads. My waist beads have the potential to change your entire life for the better by changing hearts, minds, body and holy spirit. Malon greatly appreciates the trust and support of all the women and men seeking answers.
