Call Tyrone Bag Lady
Greetings! Sundays always get the best of me and today was no different. I’ve been listening to a lot of soul music. Tomorrow’s my Mothers birthday so I thought “What music would she have listened to if she were still alive?” That’s what made me think of Erykah Badu. I decided to watch her live performance of Tyrone. I have never seen the visuals before. For some reason that song kept getting stuck in my head along with Bag Lady. When that song was introduced to my life, it made me reevaluate how I pack every time I travel. I always hear Erykah’s words “PACK LIGHT! WOO!” That wasn’t something I knew how to do before. I had a bad habit of overpacking. One day I had to stop. Overpacking is a trauma response so I had to learn how to “pack light.” I learned from my homegirl Iesha. When she visited LA to do media for BET weekend, she had 1 small carryon and a book bag. Ever since then I decided that I would start packing light. Extra baggage does make you miss your flight. I believe the song has a more powerful message with the visuals. When I traveled to Vegas, I did not “pack light” and that was definitely my fault! However when I went to Miami and Atlanta, I didn’t have much. I was able to pack super light. This is something I had to practice doing. Which speaking of packing light, I saw my favorite NBA player Tyrone again in Miami.
Part of me going to Miami was to get a way but the other part wanted to see where the studio was for Kevin Hart’s podcast Gold-minds. I always hear the commercial for it on my Pandora. When I saw Tyrone post about it, I decided to enter a chance to “win” to see the show live. I forgot the details but I never got a confirmation. So I went there anyway. As soon as I got there, I saw the camera showing them talking to each other from outside of the building. That’s when I knew they were inside. I couldn’t go in because 1. I got there too late and 2. My name wasn’t on the list. I thought as long as he sees me again, I can leave. So I waved from outside the window. I’m sure he saw me but he was talking to Kevin Hart. Meanwhile I am thinking to myself “I wonder what they are talking about.”
Well today I finally watched that interview! Honestly, I believe I need a reintroduction after what happened at NBA con. Knowing what I know now, I understand why his fans are so aggressive but I would have rather met under different circumstances but its fine. Let’s rewind for a second. Since NBA con, I decided to do my research on Tyrone. When I first saw him at NBA con, I thought “Damn where has he been?” After that experience, that’s when I started doing more research. I knew he just retired because I remember seeing an article about it. This was during my nieces graduation. I was on my way to Las Vegas when I saw the report come out. I thought to myself “Retirement now?” Then BOOM! I see this man LIVE IN ACTION at NBA con in Las Vegas. That was a very life changing experience
Never in a million years would I think I would see this man live in person so casually at NBA con. After that experience, I started doing more research when I discovered he has a memoir titled: Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised. So I decided to get the book. When I saw him out the window in Miami, this was only after reading the first couple of chapters. I finished the book a long time ago. Honestly, it was probably the most relatable book I’ve read from a celebrity. I’ve read Mariah Carey’s book, 50 cent, Megan Good and Devon Franklin, Dareal BB Judy, and many other autobiographies. However this book in particular touched me more than any other book I read. I didn’t realize that he been through so much before getting to where he is now. Overall the book was very inspirational.
Seeing Tyrone in Miami was just for fun. I wanted him to see that I was reading his book but now that I finished the book… I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. Then I started watching more interviews of him after Gold Minds. The Gold Minds interview was really great to watch. I think Kevin Hart asked some really interesting questions. What stuck out to me the most is when they started talking about INFORMATION. There were some things in that interview that I had to look up. I’m interested in learning some of this information. After watching Kevin Hart’s interview with him, I had to watch Matt Barnes interview with him for the 100th episode. That interview really had me invested because of everything that was revealed.
I keep hearing Erykah Badu voice saying “You betta call Tyroneeeeeee. CALL HIM!” I believe we have some knowledge and wisdom that needs to be exchanged. I am open to learning whatever he is willing to share with me. The only problem is, I don’t know how to get in contact with this man because of who he is. I have to be mindful of this. However, I’m pretty sure I will see him again but this time I need to TALK to this man. I loved how he talked about teaching his children what he knows to Kevin Hart in the Gold Minds interview. I believe the children are the future, teach them well and let them lead the way. I guess that’s why all those kids swarmed him at NBA con. If I could have just 1 conversation with Tyrone, who knows where things could go! Anyone who has the power to inspire me is a very special human being. I was inspired by him the day I saw him but I think seeing him is not enough. I need him to TALK THAT TALK TO ME. Word To Rihanna… There’s a list of things I want to talk to Tyrone about but I can limit it to 3 topics. First topic would be about these international ideas, second topic would be business beyond basketball and the third would have to be injury prevention. When I think about most injuries, I figured a professional athlete should know information about how to recover. Those would be my top subjects of interests. Any topics after that is FREE GAME.
Overall I am glad I took the time to learn more about him. I was young when he first got into the league. He was always my favorite NBA player because of his hair and his smile. Reading his story made him way more attractive as a man and hearing him speak makes him way more interesting. His life is fascinating to me.
Tyrone is really the only man I want to talk to right now. He has the answers sway. I could be wrong but I don’t think I am. If y’all see Tyrone around town tell him I said the ball is in his court
